While working on “Map of a City” Asemota began collecting film leaders discarded by lab technicians at Joe’s Basement, a once well-known photographic laboratory in London.

Image Sense Progress (2001) delves into the physical and abstract properties of photography, of light and colour as material and medium. The image, text and typography compositions originate from Asemota’s interest in deconstruction and in working toward freeing his work from representation.

The series’ composition prints depict renditions of light on the film leaders alongside groups of words from key texts and manuals on photography by Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, John Hedgecoe, among others. The number placed above some words denote a sense in its meaning in the Oxford English Dictionary.
